The lore goes that Sammy just wants to check your using your equipment safely. The Reaper at the front of the Aurora has commonly become known as "Sammy the Safety Reaper", after a drawing that originated on this very subreddit back in the days of early access (Based off this thread). Why wouldn't the creature follow you if it wanted a taste of your sexy rubber clad ass? This probably explains why the developers have not put any hard zoning in for the Reapers.įinally there is one last undocumented feature. In truth, regardless of whether or not it's an engine glitch, as far as gameplay goes it works. Reapers following you outside of their normal "Zone" is commonly considered a glitch by most people. Remember the golden rule, if your still hearing it, it still sees you. If you don't have a Sea Glide, the best technique is to swim to the surface and swim along the surface but take an occasional look back to insure it is out of sight. This allows you to check the Reaper is still not pathing to you. If you have a Sea Glide, the best technique is to reverse away while keeping it in your sight. To escape from a Reaper without being followed, make sure you out turn the Reaper first and insure it is swimming away from you before you start to move. All the way back to wherever you end up stopping. If you do not break this, the Reaper will continue to do so. During the lunge phase the Reaper is actively pathing towards you. These are pretty explanatory but it should be noted that during the "Lunge" phase of the attack, this is another time frame where the Reaper can be coaxed outside of its normal area and can follow you back to the safe shallows or wherever you go. It's worth noting that a Reaper has four stages of attack. You can get as close as being just out of reach of it's mandibles using this technique which is plenty close enough to scan it. In fact the closer you get, the less the Reaper is able to stay in the turn with you and the easier it is to dodge. You can even be quite close while turning. By using the strafe keys (A and D) with the mouse to maintain a constant turn around a Reaper, it simply cannot match your turn speed and it will never catch you. You have the ability to strafe left and right which the Reaper does not. The key to staying alive around a Reaper is this. That being said, sometimes you have to go toe to toe mandible tooth with a Reaper for whatever reason, and while not recommended outside the safety of a Prawn suit with something smashy as an arm, you can swim around them to a certain degree without getting an up close safety inspection provided you stay alert. If your escaping from a Reaper, make sure you can no longer hear it before you stop. Quite simply the player does not move out of the detection hitbox in time and thus the Reaper follows. This is also one of the common reasons why Reapers sometimes "Follow" players into areas they are not normally found in. The audio overlaps the hitbox slightly so if you only just begin to hear it then your still safe, if it gets louder though your definitely within range of Sammy detecting you. In actual fact, behind the mechanics of the game, the audio of the roar is used to indicate you are in the Reapers detection hitbox. The game rather ingeniously attributes this to the Reapers roar being a form of sonar. The first thing you should know about the Reaper is also the biggest piece of advice the PDA has to give you if you manage to scan one. As well as being terrifying, bitey and sometimes overly concerned for your safety, they are as scary to hear as they are to see. The scariest thing in Subnautica by far I think most would agree.
